Byllis Archaeological Park

Although it is one of the lesser-known archeological sites of the Balkans, Byllis looks imposing as you approach. It was the largest Illyrian city in southern Illyria and sits atop a hill with panoramic views over the Vjosa River valley. This strategic viewpoint was crucial to its success as a thriving city from 350 BCE to around 500 CE. The city walls were 11.4 feet (3.5 m) thick and stretched for 1.3 miles (2.2 km). Six gates controlled all flow in and out of Byllis and could be closed immediately when enemies were spotted on the horizon. But life in Byllis wasn’t always about war. A large theater with 40 rows of stadium seating was built into the side of a hill and encircled a large arena. Although we now only have remnants, Byllis makes it easy to visualize ancient Illyrian and Roman life.
