The remains of Europe’s oldest urban settlement, encased in a glass conservatory.
Around 8,500 years ago, a group of Stone Age humans settled on the right bank of the Danube River. Here, they developed a culture that had complex social relations, requiring them to organize their settlement according to a plan – the first people in Europe to do so. In addition to urban planning, the people of Lepenski vir’s religious artifacts, in the form of anthropomorphic river stones carved with fish-like features, are also on display. When plans were made to build a hydroelectric dam on the Danube, the entire site was relocated further up the bank to ensure this important part of human history wouldn’t be lost under the rising waters.
