Denmark
For decades these old mines have served as an unusual gallery for some of Denmark’s best-known sculptors.
The Thingbaek Limestone Mines opened to the public in 1935 as a sculpture museum. Candle-lit tunnels display gypsum sculptures by Anders Bundgaard and bronze works by Carl Johan Bonnesen. Many of these sculptures served as prototypes for Denmark’s monumental pieces, like the Gefion Fountain in Copenhagen. The mines maintain a cool temperature and provide a winter home for bat colonies. Since 2015, local storyteller Dannie Druehyld has conducted workshops and tours. A nearby trail passes through land art sculptures made from natural materials.
