Denmark
This ancient city is dominated by its Romanesque cathedral, which ended up with a modern twist after being destroyed on multiple occasions.
The town of Viborg was a major center for Danish politics and religion starting as early as 800, and at its core was the Viborg Cathedral. Built in the 1100s, it has had quite an unfortunate history as it has been ravaged by several fires, the latest of which was in 1726. Due to its combustibility, it has required many reconstructions. Its modern-day construction, built in 1876, is an accurate example of Romanesque architecture from its original inception. However, not every section of the cathedral was completely destroyed. The oldest section of the cathedral is the crypt, which is home to a granite coffin dating back to the 12th century, impressively cut from one stone. Today, the interior is decorated with biblically themed frescoes by Danish artist Joakim Skovgaard.
