Sweden
This bustling ferry port in Scania County is home to a popular fictional TV series, and envelops cultural attractions and 15th century monuments in its quaint streets.
Ystad is a small coastal town located in the southernmost part of Sweden, known for its well-preserved medieval center, charming cobblestone streets, and recognizable cultural exports. It’s home to the Ystad Studios, where the popular Swedish detective series 'Wallander' was filmed. Fans of the show can take a guided tour of the filming locations and learn more about the series' production. You’ll notice, wandering through the streets, that the architecture is unlike most of the rest of Sweden—this is due to its Danish influence when Ystad belonged to Denmark until 1658. The result is a colorful town bursting with half-timbered houses, with some buildings dating back to the 15th century. Stora Östergatan is the place to go for the town’s shops, cafes, and restaurants. If history takes your fancy, visit Sofiero Castle or Ystads Theater.
