Acre
One of the longest continuously inhabited settlements on the planet, this UNESCO-listed city was the Crusader capital.
About
Settled since 2000 BC, Acre was the capital and chief port of the Crusaderâs Kingdom of Jerusalem. After being conquered by the Muslims, the original defenses were further enhanced, owing their current state to the Ottomans. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and remains of the medieval Crusader settlement. The bustling main market and charming Turkish Bazaar let visitors experience life as itâs been in the city for hundreds of years - not to mention offer an opportunity to do some shopping and enjoy the cityâs exceptional food. The 18th century Al-Jazzar Mosque is a stunning example of reminder of the cityâs still-thriving Muslim community, and is the largest in the country outside of Jerusalem. Perhaps the most unique experience is the âKingdom Of The Knightsâ. The medieval Crusader settlement was buried by sand, so now you explore its streets and buildings underground, eventually following a secret tunnel to the port.
