South Africa
This UNESCO World Heritage Site educates visitors about the earth’s formation amongst the natural beauty of the world’s oldest mountain range.
Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail brings visitors through one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa: a greenbelt that’s likely the oldest mountain range on the planet. The well-paved road and easy walking paths make exploring rock formations dating back over 3 billion years easy for everyone - you just get out of the car. Informative sign posts at each of the 11 geosites describe both what you’re seeing, and how the Earth evolved from a lifeless hunk of rock. Some of the sites you’ll discover include a 3.2 billion year-old beach, volcanic pilows formed by lava erupting on the sea floor, and some of the first macroscopic signs of life.
