This perfectly proportioned Restoration-era manor with its elegant interiors might just be the ideal English country house.
Belton House was built at the end of the 17th century by Sir John Brownlow in the popular Carolean style. Though Sir John was a lawyer, he was also part of the gentry and received King William III at Belton House in 1695. Belton was one of the first houses to make use of sliding ‘sash’ windows, and it also employed faux windows to maintain symmetry in its facade. Walking through the interior, you’ll be treated to Belton’s fine decor, including ornately ornamented ceilings, Chinese wallpaper, and individual treasures like a stunning lapis lazuli cabinet. The friendly staff are happy to share more about the house, like how Prince Charles stayed here while he was a RAF cadet. You can also join an optional guided tour the head below stairs and into the world of Belton’s servants to learn about their lives at the manor.
