Busomuseum

Local history, and a UNESCO-listed tradition, is memorialized in this ethnographic museum.

About

According to legend, the Busós tradition stems from the Ottoman occupation of the area. The story goes, people fled to town of Mohács to avoid Turkish troops, until an old Šokac man appeared and told them to prepare for battle by making weapons and scary masks. One stormy night, the villagers attacked the Moorish troops, who, frightened by the noise, masks, and storm thought demons were attacking them, and fled the town. Since then, the village has celebrated with a large carnival every February. The Busomuseum immortalizes the tradition, and celebration, with a 20-member buso group. There’s also a mural depicting the origin of the legend of the busos. Exhibited along the walls, traditional and contemporary buso masks, photographs, and folk costumes, while a special section is dedicated to Anka Késics, who was the most famous singer of the local Sokác people.
