Czechoslovak Fortification in Šatov

This military fortification was first built in 1935 as part of a system of defence against nearby Austria, and is now open to the public.

About

This war-era fortification consists of both heavy and light fortifications which were used to protect the former Czechoslovakia from its Austrian neighbours to the south. The bunker also saw some reconstruction efforts in the post-war period, and was in continual use by the military from 1960 through to 1999. Today, visitors can still see some of the weaponry and arms used by the military during this period, including two fortification cannons, anti-tank and anti-personnel weapons, as well as a fortification watchtower and replica of so-called signal walls. The site is now operated by the Technical Museum of Brno, and is open to visitors from Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from June to September, and on weekends and holidays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in April, May, and October. The museum is closed for lunch daily from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
