Dow’s Pharmacy

Step back in time in this one-of-a-kind, perfectly preserved nineteenth century pharmacy.

About

Established in 1859, Dow’s Pharmacy closed its doors for business in 1968. The stock, fittings, equipment and instruments that were housed in the store back then have been meticulously preserved, like a time capsule, so you can discover the way things were in the world of pharmaceutical dispensaries. Generously donated to the National Trust by pharmacist Hilda Dow, the shop is open again for visitors. Displays of old medicines, medicinal preparation instruments and even chemist records are showcased in the museum to give visitors an insight into how it was to collect a prescription in the early twentieth century. The counter staff would have been experts in the pharmaceutical world and ready to prepare their lotions and potions per doctor demand. After visiting Dow’s Pharmacy, you’ll be sure to appreciate the medicinal advancements of today!
