Durham Castle and Cathedral

England’s largest and finest example of Norman architecture, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was featured in the first Harry Potter movie.

About

Durham Castle and Cathedral were built at the end of the 11th century under the orders of William the Conqueror to house the relics of St. Cuthbert, as well as defend the northern borders of England. The site’s innovative architecture foreshadowed the Gothic style, and stands as a monument to the power of the prince-bishops of Durham, who resided here until the complex was donated to the University of Durham. Today, the Cathedral is considered the one of Britain’s finest monuments, and it’s easy to see why with its perfect proportion, and elegant architecture, which still house the relics of Saint Cuthbert. The serene cloisters are of particular interest for pop-culture fans - they were featured in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Across the green, visitors can take a guided tour of the castle, which is still used as a very Potter-esque student residence. Stepping into the Great Hall it’s hard not to expect letter-bearing owls to fly in.
