The Gavi fortress stands upon a cliff overlooking the town of Gavi near Genoa, Northern Italy. The high walls of the fortress made it nearly impossible to defeat in its time. It has been reconfigured many times, from a castle under different rulers to a fort to the fortress that stands today. Although the specific origins are unknown, its transformations have been noted in the style of each change. Once made into a powerful fortress, it was kept as a prison up until of World War II. Since 1978, it has been under the rule of The Amici del Forte di Gavi Association to restore and protect the military and cultural significance of this ancient structure.
