Ireland
Ireland’s only show mine preserves the region’s lead and silver mining heritage.
The Glengowla Mines opened in 1851 after a farmer discovered lead lying just beneath the surface of the soil. For the next 14 years, silver, lead, as well as smaller amounts of marble, gold, dolerite, quartz, and other minerals were extracted here. After being abandoned, the mine’s new owners opened it a heritage site to preserve the region’s mining history. One a guided tour of the mines, you’ll learn how lead and silver were extracted in the twinkling subterranean passageways. Afterwards, you can try your hand at panning for gold, or learn more about the mining process in the on-site museum. If you need some fresh air, Glengowla is also working farm, so you can spend some time with the Connemara Ponies, meet Bob the sheep dog, pet the lambs, or if you book in advance, join a sheep dog herding demonstration and turf cutting demonstration.
