France
Made famous in the 17th century thanks to some exceptional writing, this Renaissance chateau has been lovingly restored to its former glory.
The original Château de Grignan was built in the early 11th century, the chateau was enlarged and fortified in the 13th century, growing until it was transformed from a fortress into a Renaissance palace at the end of the 17th century. It was during this time that the château began to gain renown thanks to Madame de Sévigné. Her many correspondences to her daughter, are considered a masterpiece of French literature, lauded for their wit and vivacity. During the French Revolution, the castle was destroyed, and it took Madame Fontaine her entire fortune to restore it in the early 20th century. Today, it stands in all its Renaissance glory, with gargoyles, columns, and bas reliefs adorning the facade. The interior has been likewise restored, with period-correct furnishings, tapestries, and artwork, supplemented with information on the castle’s history and the rooms’ decorations.
