Grjotagja Cave

This volcanic cave became world-famous after Jon Snow bed Ygritte here in Game of Thrones.

About

Grjotagja Cave is a small lava cave in the lake Mývatn volcanic landscape. Formed by volcanic activity, the cave’s thermal pool was used for bathing for centuries. In the early 18th century, the outlaw Jón Markússon took refuge in the cave, and of course took advantage of its spring. Due to volcanic activity between 1975 and 1984, the pool waters became too hot to bathe in, and as the cave is privately owned, remain off-limits to bathers. Many visitors couldn’t care less about bathing here anyways - they’re more interested in seeing where Ygritte taught Jon Snow a thing or two. Please note: you have to climb down into the cave, so people with mobility issues should take care. For those interested in seeing Iceland’s Game of Thrones locations, don’t miss the Dimmuborgir rocks, which are also by Lake Mývatn.
