Huajuapan

This charming town brings together a historical legacy of the Mixtec and charming Colonial architecture.

About

An ancient Mayan settlement, Huajuapan went under Spanish Colonial rule to become an agrarian viceregal territory. Near the present day town is a hill known as the Cerro de las Minas, the site of an ancient Mixteca settlement. Here, you will find a museum containing relics liek pottery and valuables once owned by the indigenous population that inhabited the site. In the city itself is a quaint plaza overlooked by the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The plaza is lined with trees, botanical gardens and kiosks for the people’s leisure. Once you go out of the city, you will find Las Campanas, which is a cluster of calcite rocks that drip water creating a great sightseeing attraction.
