Huesca Cathedral
This Roman Catholic church, constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, stands on top of what was originally a much older mosque.
Om
Before King Jaime I of Aragon finally initiated construction of the Huesca Cathedral in 1273, Christian worship in Huesca took place in Misleida Mosque for almost two hundred years. James believed it was highly inappropriate for Christians to worship their God in the mosque and began building a Gothic style cathedral on top of it. The cathedral incorporates parts of the original Romanesque structure which can still be seen in some of its cloisters. The architecture is not the only impressive element of this cathedral. After passing through the entryway, lined with statues of apostles sure to command attention, visitors will immediately be drawn to the ornately decorated altar and chapel. Huesca Cathedral also houses a gallery with its own collection of art. For those who donât mind climbing about 180 stairs, the view of Huesca from the top of the bell tower is certainly worth the effort.
