Jarabacoa

The rivers and waterfalls at this mountain retreat are a great way to beat the Caribbean heat.

About

Tucked away 529 meters (1,736 feet) up in the Dominican Alps, the mountain resort town of Jarabacoa is a favorite for adventurous tourists and locals alike. The high altitude offers a respite from the heat, while the sweeping green landscapes are filled with natural attractions. Some come to make the 2-3 day trek to the summit of Pico Duarte, the tallest peak in the Caribbean. Most, however, are drawn to the rivers and waterfalls that stream through the countryside. You can go river rafting, tubing, canyoning and rappelling down Salto Baiguate. Or hike up to the Salto de Jimenoa falls to swim in a natural pool at the foot of one of the Dominican Republic’s highest waterfalls. If you’re traveling with kids, head to La Confluencia, where you can take a dip in the river or go on a family horseback ride.
