Sweden
Sweden’s only Baroque city sprawls across the east coast of the Baltic Sea, connected by bridges and ferries, and is home to a thriving, UNESCO World Heritage listed naval base.
Karlskrona is a picturesque town packed with naval heritage, still evident in its impressive architecture that’s earned it a listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1680 by Karl XI, whose statue can be viewed in the famous market square Stortorget - the largest one in Sweden. Neighboring the square are two brilliant baroque churches, Trefaltighetskyrkan and Fredrikskyrkan, the latter of which is one of the most imposing buildings of classical Roman baroque in Sweden. The town's most famous attraction is the UNESCO-listed Naval Port, which is a prime example of a well-preserved 18th-century naval base. The port features several unique buildings, such as the Old Shipyard Crane and the Old Admiralty House. See the centuries-old submarine Hajen and board the submarine HMS Neptun at the Naval Museum, which covers Sweden’s history of naval defense from the past 500 years. It also displays a stunning collection of figureheads in Figurehead Hall, which once sat in the bows of Swedish warships. The naval base is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10AM to 4PM and Wednesday from 10AM to 7PM, with a US$7.80 entry fee.
