Uganda
Now home to Uganda’s biggest hydroelectric dam, this cascade is one of Victoria Nile's most thrilling attractions.
Named after the powerful being Karuma, meaning “Great Spirit”, these impressively powerful falls are one of Uganda’s biggest tourist attractions. Famously “discovered” by British explorer John Speke on his quest for the source of the Nile, the surrounding forests are home to baboons and black and white monkeys. You can sometimes spot them from the Karuma Bridge while you’re taking in the awesome majesty of the falls! The site is also now home to the biggest power producer in the country, the 600mw Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station, which was 7 years in the making. An ambitious undertaking for the Ugandan government, the dam is combating the national energy deficit with a green solution.
