Germany
Kiel is an integral part of the world’s maritime culture, hosting the largest regatta and 2 separate Olympics.
Founded in the 13th century, Kiel was a Danish property until it was annexed by Prussia in 1866. Built in a fjord, the port was one of the traditional homes of the German Navy's Baltic fleet, which was mercilessly bombarded during World War II. Today, the best way to experience the city is a walk along its waterfront promenade, where visitors can watch the constant flow of ships transporting goods, or ferrying people from Scandinavia. The walk bring visitors past rows of boathouses, and the Heimholtz Centre for Ocean Research, which has an outdoor seal aquarium. During the last week of June, the Kiel Regatta attracts sailors from around the world, and over 100 historic vessels. Throughout the year, it’s possible to step inside a decommissioned U-Boat. For visitors who can’t get enough of the maritime flavor, be sure to try the local delicacy Kieler Sprotte: a whole smoked fish presented in a wooden box.
