La Grande Saline

One of the world’s most sought after seasonings has been produced at this UNESCO World Heritage Site for thousands of years.

About

Archaeological evidence has found salt has been produced in Salins since the Neolithic era some 7000 years ago. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century that this saltworks plant was constructed. Over its long history, the saltworks used groundbreaking techniques, making it a living museum of man’s ingenuity in extracting this table necessity. Today, visitors will learn about the various history and techniques used in the salt extraction, including an underground gallery from the 13th century, and a still-functioning 19th century hydraulic pump. Please note: its around 12 Celsius underground, so bring warm clothes! Before planning your visit, please check the saltworks’ schedule at http://www.salinesdesalins.com/page_en-guided-tours-salines-salins-les-bains,7.html
