Rwanda
Amidst rolling hills, lush vegetation and small fishing villages, this stunning freshwater lake is an icon of eastern Burundi.
Lake Muhazi is a flooded valley lake fed by several small rivers and streams, providing abundant fishing and irrigation resources for the local population of Burundi. It empties its water into the Nyabugogo River, flowing south of the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. The lake is known as an incredible bird watching destination, with unique species such as the malachite king fishers, African fish eagles, village weavers, yellow billed storks and grey crowned cranes flocking to the beautiful surrounds. Tourists flock to the lake for its two main resorts, including the Seeds of Peace Center and the nearby Rwesero beach resort. Take a boat tour of the lake, go fishing with local fishermen and catch Nile perch and catfish, or simply relax on the sandy shores while admiring the rich diversity of wildlife.
