Explore canyons and streams, woods and prairie, in this park brimming with life!
Once a grand estate featuring two mansions, several cottages and even a private fire station, the Matthiessen State Park is named in honor of the family who donated their 176-acre property to the state of Illinois in 1918. Since then, it’s expanded to more than ten times its original size! It’s a hiking hotspot, with more than five miles of trails passing over steep cliffs and through deep canyons, all surrounded by beautiful forest. Routes vary from an easy stroll to a more intense hike, so there’s something for everyone - just be sure to stick to the trail for your safety! The dramatic sandstone rock formations aren't the only thing to see - the park is filled with wildlife, and it's not uncommon to spot deer drinking from mineral springs in the mile-long main canyon!
