Moreruela Abbey

Though Spain's first Cisterian monastery is now ruin, the air of neglect creates a unique atmosphere around the impressive architecture.

About

Likely founded around the 9h century by King Alfonso III or Saint Froilan as a Benedictine monastery, the building was given to the Cisterian order by Alfonso VII around 1131, making it the first Cisterian establishment in the country. The abbey existed until the 19th century, when it and the rest of the church properties in the area were confiscated by Mendizabal. After this, it fell into ruin, though was still declared a national monument in 1931. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the abbey church, with its towering chapel still intact, as well as the chapterhouse and remnants of conventual buildings which have been partly restored thanks to the Castile and León government.
