South Africa
The largest Buddhist complex in the Southern Hemisphere is a slice of the Far East in the Highveld.
Nan Hua Temple was opened in 2005 by the Fo Guang Shan order. Promoting peace and humanism, the temple is South Africa’s largest seminary, attracting novices from around Africa, and visitors from around the world. After passing through the monumental gates, visitors are treated to an impressive display of elaborate architecture. The bright colors, yellow tiled roofs, and carved stone lions all stand in exotic contrast to the surrounding farmland. During holidays like Buddha’s birthday or the Chinese New Year, the temple is festively decorated and puts on celebrations that are open to the public. As it is an active religious site, visitors are asked to dressing appropriately.
