Red weathered pillars of clay tower overhead, reminiscent of a Martian landscape rise above the snaking Ahuriri river.
On a perfect day, with blue sky and long shadows, the Omarama Clay Cliffs are truly a photographer’s dream. Formed about a million years ago from layers of silt and gravel moved along by flowing glaciers, these structures known as ‘Hoodoos’ are close cousins of those present at the famous Zion National Park in the States. There is a short 100 m walk to the start of the cliffs and from then on without any official trails you can just explore around the site, taking in the gorgeous pastel reds and bright blues that transform with the ever shifting shadows and light as the sun moves across the sky. Discover one of the most picturesque sights on the south island rising above the surrounding bush and stretch your legs in a truly unique place. Make sure to bring sturdy foot wear and a good camera!
