Phitsanulok

The birthplace of kings and former Thai capital, this historic city has a wealth of heritage sites.

About

Phitsanulok was founded in the 11th century as a small Khmer outpost, but became a major city in Thai history, briefly serving as the capital of the Ayutthaya kingdom, and was the birthplace of King Naresuan, who freed the country from Burmese domination in the late 16th century. Today, this friendly city has a slew of attractions that are making it an increasingly popular place to visit. Chief among these is the Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat, a 14th century temple with some amazing ornamentation, including mother-of-pearl inlay doors, and one of the country’s most revered Buddha images. You’ll also be able to examine a sizeable collection of Sukhothai period art at the Buddha Chinnarat National Museum. To learn about local culture, the Sergeant Major Thawee Folk Museum has exhibits everything from tools to textiles, to native fish in five traditional Thai buildings.
