Rummu Quarry & Prison

One of the most mysterious places in all of Estonia beckons visitors with the allure of a submerged metropolis.

About

The Rummu Quarry and Prison is a veritable Atlantis of historic buildings that have dipped below the surface of crystal blue waters. The beach and diving attraction gets its name from the small, nearby town of Rummu and is the site of a former Soviet prison constructed in the 1940’s. Around 400 prisoners were forced to pump water out of the pits under harsh conditions and since Estonia’s independence in 1991, the abandoned site filled with water, forming a stunning lake. For a fee of €3, visit the secret location and explore the buildings on dry land. If you’re experienced, you can go scuba diving through the clear water and see the underwater buildings, or rent a canoe for €25 and paddle along the lake. Ashy dunes surround the site, from the top of which you can admire the impressive view of the prison and lake before heading to the beach cafe for a refreshing drink or ice cream.
