San Agustin Archaeological Park

Considered the world’s largest necropolis, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with hundreds of highly-stylized carvings from a mysterious ancient culture.

About

The San Agustin Archaeological Park showcases the creativity and imagination of an enigmatic culture that thrived in the region from 1000 BC to 1000 AD. These people had no written language, and are mostly known from the carvings they left scattered around the region. The archaeological park is believed to be the largest necropolis in the world, and the largest collection of megalithic sculptures in Latin America. The hundreds of statues found here are fabulously-stylized depictions of men, gods, and mythical creatures that were originally painted in vibrant colors. While the large, almost cartoon-like sculptures get most of the attention, don’t miss the Fuente de Lavapatas - a stream bed covered with more intricate carvings of lizards, aquatic creatures, and human figures, surrounded by swirling channels and smaller pools, which were likely used for some ceremonial purpose.
