Tunisia
Tunisia’s second largest city offers an authentic and unsullied look at the country’s culture.
Sfax was established in AD 849 on the ruins a Roman city. As a major port, Sfax was its own city-state for centuries before being targeted by the Sicilians, Spanish, Ottomans, and Venetians. When Tunisia became a French protectorate in 1881, this proud city revolted, and the French had to dispatch both ironclad and cannon ships to bombard the city into submission. Today, Tunisia’s second largest port is the second most important city in the country, but often passed over by tourists. The historic medina, chock full of souks, is an intoxicating blend of history and modernity where travellers can experience a genuine Tunisian way of life. Sfax’s history is proudly presented in the city’s excellent museums, be it the Folk Art Museum housed in a lavish 18th century mansion, or the Archaeology Museum in City Hall.
