Tunisia
The namesake of Luke and Anakin’s homeworld, the centuries-old settlements near this city stood in for Mos Espa.
For nerds around the world, Tataouine is one of the most famous cities that you never knew existed. Relatively modern, the city itself wasn’t featured in Star Wars, but George Lucas did use its name in recognition of the many filming locations in southern Tunisia. The main draw here are the nearby fortified granaries where the movies were actually filmed. Built in the 15th century by the local Berbers, Ksar Ouled Soltane is a multi-level building designed to protect grain and people from raiders and the scorching desert sun. The sun-baked adobe buildings with their narrow exterior stairways stood in for Mos Espa and the slave quarters where young Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi lived in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The nearby Ksar Hadada also served as part of the Mos Espa slave quarters.
