This rocky peninsula is revered for its cliff-top temple its divine surf break.
The heart of Uluwatu is its temple, which is believed to have been established 1000 years ago by the revered monk Mpu Kunturan, who founded several other temples on the island, though another local legend attributes the temple to the priest Danghyang Nirartha. Within the temple you can find a 10th century winged gate, a brahmin statue admiring the view of the Indian Ocean, and even a Megalithic coffin. What made Uluwatu an international destination is the beach below the cliff. Discovered by surfers in 1971, Uluwatu is now one of the most famous breaks in Bali. Even if you don’t plan on paddling out, visitors can hang on the beach, grab a snack from one of the many garungs, or explore the dramatic ins and outs of the rocky coastline.
