Chichen Itza
First settled in the 5th century, Chichen Itza became the most powerful city in the Yucatan around 1000AD after it was conquered by the Toltecs. This blending of Mayan and Toltec cultures made Chichen Itza one of the most diverse ancient cities in Mesoamerica, a tradition that was preserved in its art and architecture. The most famous monument is, of course, the 30 meter high pyramid, with its serpent-headed staircase. If you’re visiting around the equinox (or come for the night show), you’ll see how the corners of the pyramid were carefully constructed to create a serpent-like shadow on the sides of the staircase. But the pyramid is just one part of this once-great city - nearby you’ll find the Great Ball Court, the Skull Wall, and multiple temples. And in the group of buildings to the south, a stellar observatory. Then there’s the older Puuc-style neighborhood, with monuments like the Temple of the Panels and the Temple of the Deer.

Valladolid
Founded by the Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Montejo in 1543 at a lagoon called Chouac-Ha, Valladolid was moved to its current location in 1545 because of mosquitos. Despite being one of the largest cities in Yucatan, Valladolid has a laid-back atmosphere and preserves both its Colonial and Mayan roots. At the heart of the city, dominating the main square is the Iglesia de San Servacio, which was built in 1706 after the Bishop Pedro De Los Rios Reyes ordered the destruction of the original 16th-century cathedral. The Convent of San Bernadino de Siena is another notable Colonial landmark, which is filled with colorful frescoes dating back to the 16th century. For Mayan culture, don’t miss the Casa de los Venados, which exhibits the Mexico’s largest private collections of pre-colonial art. But the top activity here is just wandering the streets, starting with the colorful Calzada de Los Frailes, to enjoy the atmosphere.
