Badajoz
Positioned near the Portuguese border, frequent invasions put the city on the defensive, and even the churches look fortified against attack.
About
Built by the Moors in 875 over an existing Visigoth settlement, the area was disputed between Spain and Portugal for several centuries. While not much remains of the ancient Roman and Visigoth structures, there are some stunning examples of Moorish and medieval architecture. Overlooking the city is the ancient Moorish citadel of Alcazaba, which dates almost to the city’s founding. Down the hill, the vibrant Plaza Alta is home to the city’s oldest houses and. For a more ornate example of Moorish architecture, La Giralda is almost an exact copy of the Giralda de Seville, and shouldn’t be missed, even if it’s a commercial space. The 16th century Puerta Palmas is a unique fortified gate with two towers, which served as a royal prison until the end of the 19th century.
