Casale Monferrato Cathedral

Built over several centuries, this historic Cathedral is a smorgasbord of religious art and architecture.

About

While ground broke for this church dedicated to St. Evasio in the 12th century, construction continued through the 19th. The narthex is unique in Italy for its Armenian and Islamic features. Inside, Gothic-Romanesque architecture contrasts with vibrant frescoes and gilting. Baroque Chapel of St. Evasio houses the remains of the patron saint in a silver statue, while the surrounding paintings depict his life, up until his decapitation on the church parvis. Near the marble rendition of Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, a small column bears the monogram of Christ, indicating the spot where St. Evasio was martyred. According to legend, you can hear the flow of his blood is you press your ear to the column. The large crucifix is covered with 11th century silver foils, while the 18th century high altar and the rococo choir, over which Guala's portraits are conserved. At the back, the church museum exhibits mosaics, gold-workings and textile artefacts.
