Church of the Holy Cross in Patrauti
This mural-covered UNESCO World Heritage Site is the oldest surviving religious site founded by Stephen the Great.
About
The Church of the Holy Cross was founded as a monastery by Stephen the Great in 1487, with vibrant murals being added to the interior and exterior around 1550. In 1775 the region was annexed by the the Habsburg Empire, and the monastery turned into a parish church. Of the original monastic complex, only the wooden bell tower and church remain. Itâs still possible to see some of the external murals on the churchâs western facade, while the interior is well preserved and nearly completely covered with colorful murals.
