Reconnect with nature in this pleasant park that was once a derelict cotton field.
The Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve began as a backyard project. In 1969, Harold and Josephine Hatcher retired to Spartanburg, South Carolina, and slowly built up a 10-acre property, but much of the land was in ruin. So they got to work refilling the soil eroded by cotton farming, cleaning up trash and weeds, and planting thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers. Today, what were once depleted cotton fields are a botanical refuge that is free for anyone needing to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. A number of walking trails lead through the conifers, and past themed sections including a hosta garden, butterfly garden, wildflower garden and Water Wise Garden.
