Lugo

As the only city in the world to be surrounded by completely intact Roman walls, UNESCO-listed Lugo’s history and culture are sure to impress.

About

Visitors can walk along the top of the 2,117-metre, uninterrupted circuit of 3rd century walls, complete with 71 towers and 10 gates, and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The bridge over the Minho is also of Roman origin, though many repairs over the centuries have effaced its Roman character. Probably founded by Celtic inhabitants of the region and dedicated to Lugos, a pan-Celtic God of light, oaths, and art, Lugo was later conquered by the Romans in 13 BC before being found deserted in the middle of the 8th century. The area is now home to almost 100,000 inhabitants and features a rich history, from it’s 12-century cathedral, 18th-century Baroque-style City Hall, and the remains of a Roman bath at the edge of the Minho river.
