Italy
This secluded noble residence houses some of the finest frescoes in Italy, and we don’t know who painted them.
The frescoes in the 12th century Castello della Manta are masterpieces of Italian Late Gothic art, though the name of their creator has been lost through the ages. On one side of the Baronial Hall are the 9 Worthies: Mannerist portraits of historical figures such as King Arthur, Charlemagne, and French kings. On the other side is the Fountain of Youth, inspired by Marquess Thomas III of Saluzzo’s poem Le Chevalier Errant. In the wings are scenes of rural and courtly life. The annexed church features a series of frescoes about the life of Christ dating from the same time as the Baronial Hall decorations.
