Mining History Centre Lewarde
This former mining complex is now dedicated to preserving every facet of the regionâs 300 years of mining history.
About
In 1931, the Delloye colliery began operations, but operations stopped in 1971 because the narrow seams made mining difficult and unprofitable. Since the site was now available, the mining company decided to open a museum honoring the areaâs 300 years of mining history. Opened in 1984, the Mining history Centre preserves and promotes the Nord-Pas de Calaisâs mining culture for future generations. In 2000 the site received a major renovation, with the creation of new buildings and exhibition areas. Now visitors can head to the mining museum to to see some 15,000 objects relating to the coalfield. Along with the history of mining techniques, the museum also exhibits objects from minersâ daily lives, and even a collection of coal fossils. In the scientific and technical energy culture centre, visitors can learn about the history of coal in the wider context of the history of energy.
