Sankt Goar

The town of Sankt Goar sits in the middle of the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is home to Rheinfels Castle ruins.

About

On the hill overlooking the picturesque town of Sankt Goar are the ruins of Rheinfels Castle, the largest fortress to ever overlook the Rhine. Once five times its current size, the massive ruins still form an imposing sight. Built in the thirteenth century, it is not difficult to imagine life back in medieval times as you wander the castle remains, the museum and the underground tunnels. The fact that the original castle was built to house up to 4,000 people during sieges gives an idea of just how large it was in its medieval heyday. Visitors can explore the 600 feet long underground tunnels, for which a flashlight is needed (although candles are provided free of charge), and experience the castle dungeon. All in all, Rheinfels Castle is the best hands-on visitor experience of castle ruins along the Rhine and comes with the added bonus of providing excellent photo opportunities of the region.
