The Blaye Citadel

A serene place with a gorgeous natural backdrop, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was a formidable piece of military architecture in its heydey.

About

Built by the famous military architect Vauban in the 17th century, this walled city was purpose-built to defend Bordeaux from attacks by sea. One of a series of sites designed by the architect that are on the UNESCO list, the town inside is still inhabited. From its rocky promontory, the fort offers stupendous views of the Gironde estuary - one of the largest in Western Europe. Today, visitors can explore the ramparts, fortified gates, barracks, prison, and powder magazine on their own, or opt for a guided tour for an even more complete history, including a visit to the secret underground passages.
