Overview: car trip from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz
The drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz, two of Baja California Sur's most popular destinations, offers a scenic and diverse journey through the heart of the Baja Peninsula.
As you leave the bustling streets of Cabo San Lucas, youâll head north on Mexicoâs Highway 19. The first leg of your journey will take you through arid deserts dotted with towering cacti, rocky outcrops, and sparse vegetation. Itâs a far cry from the tropical beaches of Cabo, but a beautiful landscape nonetheless.
The drive is approximately 100 miles (160 km) of panoramic desert and semi-tropical views. It typically takes around 2 hours, and there are several opportunities to step into nature at sites like Fox Canyon and the Mogote Sand Dunes.
As La Paz becomes visible in the distance, the arid desert gives way to lush coastal scenery once again. If you chose Daytrip for this transfer, youâll be dropped off right at your hotel, so you donât waste a single minute of your vacation. ÂĄVamos!
About La Paz
La Paz, or âPeace,â is a serene coastal city located on the Gulf of California. Known for its stunning sunsets and turquoise waters, La Paz has all the amenities of a resort town with the connectivity of a major city.
La Paz: the pearl of Mexico
Spanish Conquistadors, led by Hernan Cortes, made contact with the Guaycura _in the 1530s when their boats came ashore off of the Gulf of California. The Spanish took note of the large pearls used for jewelry and decorations by the _Guaycura and tried to violently take control of the area.
For about 50 years, the Spanish and native populations fought for control of natural resources until the Spanish succeeded in stripping the shore of most of the oysters for their pearls and forever altering the map of Latin America.
La Paz didnât become a major city until 1829, when it became the capital of the state of Baja California Sur. Mining, agriculture, fishing, and, of course, pearls, were major industries that led to La Pazâs growth as the largest city in Baja California Sur.
La Paz Today
Today, La Paz has 250,000 residents and an international airport (LAP), making it a popular arrival and departure point for the many resort towns in the area. It is nestled inside the Bay of La Paz with long stretches of beach and is a short distance by boat from several islands. It is the perfect city to round out your trip to Mexico!
From Cabo San Lucas to La Paz: travel tips
Keep these tips in mind when packing for your Cabo to La Paz transfer!
Donât forget skin protection
Sun damage is no joke! Wear your wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and loose-fitting long-sleeve clothes to protect your skin from Mexicoâs strong sun. Drink plenty of water as you travel and donât forget to re-apply sunscreen every few hours.
Leave nature where it belongs
Baja California is home to many unique, endangered species, and the golden rule for visiting nature is to âtake nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprintsâ. When visiting the Sierra de La Laguna UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, San JosĂ© del Cabo Estuary, and attractions like Fox Canyon, donât take souvenirs like rocks, shells, wood, dirt, or plants. This not only protects the natural environment but also prevents the spread of invasive species to other countries.

Unlike a shuttle bus, you wonât have to travel all over the city before reaching your hotel or the airport. Daytripâs door-to-door service ensures you get right where you need to be on your schedule. Book your ride today for as little as $42 (prices in USD) per passenger.
Buses from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz

Shuttle Buses from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz
Shuttle buses are a smart way to split the cost of your Cabo San Lucas to La Paz transfer among multiple travelers. Prices per passenger range from $40 to $70, and some shuttle companies specialize in airport transfers.
Shuttle bus rides take about 2.5 hours to get to La Paz, but you will have to factor in the pick-ups and drop-offs of other passengers. If your hotel is the first stop for pick-ups in Cabo or the last stop in La Paz, you may be in for a much longer ride.
Before booking, ask about the pick-up and drop-off points. Some shuttle services do not include door-to-door transfers but will leave all passengers in a central location in La Paz. Consult a map about the drop-off pointâs distance to your hotel before making any reservations.
Things to do when you get to La Paz
La Paz is home to some of the most stunning natural wonders. It is a nature loverâs paradise, with caves, crystal clear water, unique marine life, and hiking trails to explore. After you arrive from your trip from Cabo to La Paz, grab your sunscreen and water bottle for these unforgettable sites.

Boat tours typically last 5-6 hours and include lunch. As an insider tip: after all that swimming, the boat ride back may be chilly, so have a dry set of clothes and a cardigan for the windy ride home.
Balandra Beach
Balandra Beach is a protected area known for its striking blue waters and mushroom-shaped rock formation. Only 450 people can visit Balandra Beach daily to preserve its delicate shoreline. To manage this, you can choose between two time slots for your visit: the morning session from 8 AM to 12 PM or the afternoon session from 1 PM to 5 PM.
While access to the beach is free, it's crucial to arrive early before the beach opens for your desired time slot to ensure you make the cut-off.
Hiking Cerro de la Calavera
Cerro de la Calavera, or âSkull Hill,â has trails to natural rock formations, arches, and caves along the cliffâs edges that have been carved out by time. The trail is ranked âmoderateâ for most hikers, but you canât beat the views at sunset!
When is the best time to visit La Paz
Like most of the tropics, La Paz has two seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season, running from November through April, is the most popular time to visit La Paz. During these months, you can expect abundant sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making it the perfect time to bask on sandy beaches and enjoy outdoor activities.
May to October are the rainy season months, with heavy rainfall and storms. We recommend not visiting during this time to prevent cancellations of outdoor excursions and flights.

Why people love Daytrip
- 433 travelers took this route with us
âI used this service for a transfer from Split in Croatia to Perast Montenegro. My experience was exceptional. My driver Bojan was helpful, informative and ensured my journey was comfortable and enjoyable. I highly recommend the service.â
âWe were extremely satisfied with the quality of service we received from Day Trip. We had two Day Trip rides on August 31 from Athens to Lefkada and September 7 from Lefkada back to Athens. Both trips included stops at scenic sites in Greece. Both drivers were excellent and accommodating. However, weâd especially like to recognize Panos Peppas, who was our driver from Lefkada to Athens. Panos was incredibly nice & pleasant and delivered outstanding customer service, which included handling all of luggage, providing us with cold waters throughout the trip, providing us protein bars, providing us with printed materials on the Corinth Canal (one of scenic stops), looking up and providing us with terminal & gate info for our flight back home and providing us with a recipe for tzatziki.â
Best transport company anywhere
âWe absolutely love this company and have used it many times over the years to get from A to B without the hassle of hiring a car ourselves. Excellent drivers every time. Efficient and professional. Itâs worth every penny and we can honestly recommend Day Trip to everyone. Itâs 5 star rating is well deserved.â
Excellent experience in traveling
âWe traveled from Nuremberg to Munich in a beautiful Audi. Driver picked us at our hotel at the exact time requested. Got us to Munich in plenty of time for our next tour. Driver made sure we were comfortableâ
Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation
âGonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.â
âWe were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.â
âUsed the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.â
Comfortable and Safe Rides in Mexico
âUsed Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.â
Great way to travel and see some sights on the way
âWe did not know what to expect with this trip and booked from Australia. We were initially looking for an easy way to travel from Granada to Malaga. We decided not to waste the opportunity to see something additional on our way. Miguel certainly exceeded our expectations. His English was excellent (unfortunately we speak very little Spanish), and he was very friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the regions as we passed through and also discussing some of the local ways. Miguel took us to Antequera as planned and ensured we were able to easily get our tickets to the attractions without any sense of rushing us. We were picked up and dropped off punctually and really enjoyed our trip. Hopefully we will return to Spain and we can use this service again sometime.â
âWe used the service twice while in Thailand. Extremely prompt and efficient customer service. Best rate being offered in Chiang Mai for the travels. Polite, punctual, professional and English speaking drivers. Clean, comfortable vehicles. Being a regular visitor to Thailand, this was hands down the best service. Most pleased with the company. I hope it sustains the excellence of service that was rendered to us.â
