Main attractions ⢠A 75-metre single-drop waterfall plunging into a circular pool of cold, intensely turquoise water at the base of the Tenorio volcanic range ā one of the most powerful and visually dramatic waterfalls in Costa Rica, framed on all sides by primary rainforest with Arenal Volcano occasionally visible above the canopy on clear days ⢠The pool at the base is large enough and deep enough for open swimming ā the force of the fall creates a permanent mist over the pool and a cool microclimate that makes the base feel entirely separate from the heat of the surrounding lowland forest ⢠The approach trail descends 500 steps carved into the steep rainforest wall of the gorge ā the descent passes through dense vegetation with good birdwatching, the sound of the fall building steadily before the waterfall itself comes into view at the final bend
Things to do ⢠Swimming in the pool beneath the falls ā the water is cold, clear and genuinely refreshing; swimming toward the base of the falls is possible but the force of the water close in is significant and most visitors swim in the wider pool rather than directly beneath the drop ⢠Birdwatching on the descent trail ā the forested gorge walls shelter tanagers, euphonias, toucans and the occasional resplendent quetzal in the higher sections of the trail during the right season; the early morning descent offers the best sightings before the main visitor flow begins
What to eat ⢠A small cafĆ© and restaurant operate at the trailhead above the falls ā reliable for coffee and a light meal before the descent or after the climb back up; the town of La Fortuna a short drive away has a wide range of restaurants for a fuller lunch or dinner
Daytrip is loved all around the world. Here's why.
