Al Khamis Mosque will catch your eye as you pass along the Shaikh Salman Road in Khamis, with its distinctive identical twin minarets standing tall. Considered one of the oldest mosques in the region, its origins can be traced back to as early as 692 CE. Throughout the centuries, the mosque underwent several reconstructions and expansions, such as a second minaret being added in the 14th to 15th centuries, giving the ancient structure its recognizable appearance. Standing in Bilad al-Qadim, also known as тАЬThe Old TownтАЭ, the mosque stands amidst a rich historical setting that has been inhabited since at least the 8th century CE. Upon visiting the mosque, explore a small visitor center with aerial photos of the old town, ancient gravestones, artifacts, old coins, gems and pearls. Moving further, an expansive open space reveals remnants of ancient structures and a collapsed shrine. Finally, the focal point is the mosque itself, in all its enduring architectural beauty.
