Aquincum Roman City and Museum

Aquincum Roman City & Museum mark the remains of the Roman provincial capital, and stands as the most complete Roman civilian settlement in Hungary. Built around 100 AD, the city quickly rose to prominence, and it’s believed Marcus Aurelius wrote part of Meditations here. Sometime in the 5th century, encroaching tribes and a weakened Roman Empire forced the city to be abandoned. Here, you can see the remains of 2000 year old houses, baths, courtyards, fountains, and sophisticated underfloor heating systems. There’s also a recreation of a Roman painter's dwelling and the Symphorus Mithraeum has been partly restored. In the purpose-built museum, you can learn more about the city and Roman life through the vast collection of artefacts, artwork, and recreations. Keep an eye out for the replica 3rd century portable organ, and recreated Roman bath. At the end of May, you can put on your best toga for the Floralia Roman festival.
