Tracing back to 1890, the founder of the resort of Piriapoolis, Don Francisco Piria, purchased a large stretch of land which encompasses Cerro Pan de Azucar, and stretches all the way to the beach. Years later, a famous sculptor named Juan Zorrilla de San Martin decided to construct the 35-metre cross and erect it on the top of the hill. The pathway to this beautiful structure is complemented by a staircase that offers glimpses of the surroundings, which are visible through small outlets as you ascend. To add to its serenity, more recently, a nature conservation for animals vulnerable to extinction was established in the 1980s, and is located on one side. If you want to break up a long car ride and stretch your legs, allow 2-3 hours and pack comfortable shoes to climb this hill; the breathtaking view is worth it.
