Though HerendтАЩs history goes back to Roman times, the village was essentially emptied when Hungary was under Ottoman control. Between 1764 and 1847 it was gradually repopulated, and the Herend Porcelain Manufactory. HerendтАЩs hand painted and gilded porcelain received international attention after being exhibited in Hungary, Vienna, London, New York, and Paris in the mid 19th century, being ordered by the royal courts of Queen Victoria, Francis Joseph I of Austria, Maximillian, the Mexican emperor, as well as by wealthy families like the Rothschilds. Today, visitors can head to the Minimanufactory to learn about the secrets of porcelain-making, and even try their hand at this delicate craft by signing up for a workshop! Meanwhile, at the Porcelain Museum, you can see a permanent exhibition of HerendтАЩs exquisite products as well as the ManufactoryтАЩs history and technology.
